As we approached the gold washed city of souls, disparate thoughts inundated us. A sense of eerieness, mysticism wafted from the structures amidst the overwhelming tranquility. The Bada Bagh located on the outskirts of the city of Jaisalmer on Ramgarh road houses royal cenotaphs of Bhatti rulers of Jaisalmer.
As we sauntered through the rows of the cenotaphs the carvings and the embellishments become more prominent. Immaculate, Elegant, and Beautiful!
The center of the cenotaphs is bedecked with an upright stone slab sculpted with an equestrian figure representing the King. Distressing Part: The figures on slab folding hands represent King’s ‘Satis’ (his wives who jumped into flames of the funeral pyre).
The cenotaphs built in the memory of the rulers have different architectural design styles and sizes adorned with intricate carvings.
The tradition was started by Lunkaran son of Jai Singh II in 16th-century to commemorate his father’s contribution in making the desert green around Bada Bagh.
As the sun began to set each of the stones shone the golden glow with a mysterious aura of emptiness.
As the sun melts into the horizon the tourists start to descend and the pigeons return to their dwellings in this desolate city of royal cenotaphs.
The wretched state of the spectacular cenotaph elaborately engraved with the famous Jaisalmer sandstone crumbling to dust is deplorable.
Some of the impeccable artwork of cenotaphs today are mere dust never to rise back their days of glory.
Still, the aura will embrace you with its warm solace and beckon you to experience the royal glory.
The tradition of building the cenotaphs at Bada Bagh ended with the unfinished cenotaph of King Jawahar Singh when the unexpected death of his son was taken as a bad omen.
Read through our experiences on several other legions of cenotaphs in Rajasthan we came across in the cities we visited during our recent trip.
