The cable car or gondola ride up the mountain in Switzerland offers several vantage points as we ascend from base to the summit. So here we list the best cable car rides in Switzerland to experience the fairytale land of Switzerland. So buckle up and sit tight as we take you on a ride up the Alps.
The cable car station to Harder Kulm is a few minutes walk from the Interlaken Ost Station. The cable car station is located next to the Interlaken-Harder Alpine Game Park and the ascend offers vista over the Alpine ibex enclosures and a marmot colony.
The ten-minute ride up the mountain to the summit at 1322 m offers stunning views of the valleys peppered with chalets and the farms below. There is a restaurant on the summit where you can get something to eat or drink. The vantage points from summit offer great panoramic views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau, the town of Interlaken as well as Lakes Thun and Brienz.
Wildkirchli in Appenzell is popular for the ancient caves and the Aescher restaurant that clings to the cliff. The Ebenalp cable car station for a ride up to Wildkirchli is located across the street from the Wasserauen train station. The steepest seven-minute ride up to Ebenalp ascends dwarfing the town of Appenzell and the hundreds of cars parked in the lush green valley below surrounded by alpine massif. The snow-covered slopes take over the verdant valleys dotted with wooden chalets and grazing cows half the way to Ebenalp summit. From here it is a 15-minute trek to the caves and the mountain restaurant of Wildkirchli.

The breathtaking journey to the Top of Europe ‘Jungfraujoch’ can be done on one of the two routes of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. The cogwheel train chugs up the mountain winding through the lush green meadows peppered with alpine blossoms with the colossal snow mountains towering to Kleine Scheidegg. From here begins the trip through the tunnel with two intermediate stops for spectacular views of Alps to Europe’s highest train station.
The Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe station at 3,454 m offers splendid views of the glaciers, Alpine peaks of Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger and the surrounding valleys.
The starting point for the gondola ride up to the First Summit starts next to Grindelwald Firstbahn in Grindelwald. The ascend offers a panoramic view of the beautiful town of Grindelwald at the foothill of the colossal snow-covered mountain. A well-paved hiking path snakes through the green meadows below dotted with lovely brown chalets and Lamas farms.
The summit has a restaurant with sun terrace offering impressive views of the surrounding Alps. From the summit, one can trek to the Bachalpsee, the lake which is famed for stunning reflections of the surrounding Alps. Or take a thrilling Grindelwald-First cliff walk taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the sheer drop below.
The gondola ride up the mountain to Titlis a popular snow resort at 3020 m starts from a charming alpine village of Engelberg. The gondola climbs up to Jochpass from Engelberg over the charming village and the green meadows below amidst the jingle of the cowbells. The vistas change from green meadows to snow-covered slopes as the gondola ascends from Jochpass to Trubsee up to the summit with slopes marked by the trails of skiers.
The last leg of the ride from Stand to the peak is the most breathtaking as the Rotair gondola rotates its way up for a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding Alps. The summit has shops, restaurants, a glacier cave and a snow park which makes it an ideal day trip with families in Switzerland.
The queen of mountains Rigi Kulm offers some of the stunning views over the lush green mountains, towns, and lakes of Switzerland. The ride up to the Rigi summit is a fun combination of the cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad and then onwards a cogwheel to the summit. The cable car ride up the mountain offers some wonderful views of the lush green forests, verdant meadows and the city of Lucerne. One can also take a direct cogwheel ride to the summit from Vitznau route climbing through green meadows dotted with alpine wildflowers and pretty chalets. Both Weggis and Vitznau can be reached by a ferry from Lucerne ferry terminal.
Matterhorn in Zermatt a small car-free village is a pyramid-shaped mountain in the Alps frequented by mountain lovers and hikers. The Matterhorn Express gondola ascends up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 meters. The ride up the mountain sweeps over the snow covered pretty chalets and conifers to the wonderful views of undulating snow-covered valleys packed with skiers in winter and lush green meadows dotted with pretty lakes in summer. The stops along the ascend have restaurants and sun terrace which offers a majestic view of the iconic Matterhorn and are starting points for several amazing trekking trails. The ride on the cogwheel train to Gornergrat also offers wonderful views panoramic views of the Alps.
The cable car base to Murren is in Stechelberg. A short 5 minutes ride sweeps the rugged rock face high above the Lauterbrunnen valley to the mountains blanketed in the soft snow below the fairytale village of Gimmelwald which dots the slopes of the verdant mountain. The mountains are an ideal place for parasailing and hiking and one can find plenty of them during the ascent.
From Gimmelwald another 5-minute ride above the brown chalets of Gimmelwald will bring one to car-free village of Murren. The charming villages Gimmelwald and Murren are ideal to experience the quintessential Swiss village amidst the vistas of magnificent mountains. One can also continue the gondola ride to the summit of Schilthorn overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley and the towering snow-capped mountains.
Mount Pilatus at 2,120 m can be reached from Kriens and Alpnachstad both of which can be reached by boat from Lucerne. The cogwheel train from Alpnachstad is the world’s steepest rack-railroad with spectacular vistas of the dramatic rock face on the right and deep verdant valleys on the left. The gondola from Kriens sweeps over the whitewashed city of Lucerne cutting through the towering conifers to Frakmuntegg from here the picturesque landscape is comprised of a belt of the lush green forest with the city of Lucerne and the lake at the distant horizon. Summit has several restaurants and sun terrace to enjoy the panoramic vistas of surrounding peaks.
The pretty cogwheel steam train puffs and chugs to the summit of Brienzer Rothorn at 2350 m through a breathtaking landscape of Bernese Oberland. The alpine traveling experience starts at Brienz winding its way up the mountain through the bright green meadows dotted with alpine flowers and towering snow-capped mountains. The summit has a restaurant and offers incredible views of the Brienz lake and the surrounding landscapes. Alternatively one can take a cable car up to the Brienzer Rothorn from Sorenberg which offers equally gorgeous alpine vistas.
