Ever fantasized to stand on the top of a mountain surrounded by the splendid view of Swiss Alps, ever stretching green meadows, towns, and lakes in a panorama. Mount Rigi popularly known as the ‘Queen of the Mountains’ is a Sierra of the Alps, located in Central Switzerland. The whole mountain range is almost entirely surrounded by the lakes and is split between two cantons. It is also an ideal place for mountain hikers.
One has to board a ferry from the ferry terminal of Lucerne which is around 5 min walk from Lucerne train station, just follow the signboards. The ferry was large and comfortable enough with restaurant and chairs and benches put up on the deck of the ferry where one can sit and enjoy the majestic views of the lakes.
The picture perfect view of the city of Lucern looked more bewitching with the ducks and swans swimming in the calm blue lake in the imposing backdrop of the towering buildings of the city.
We sailed along the hills graced with bright fall colors and the occasionally peeking classic houses which created a spectacular panorama.
One can find many speedboats and private boats partying and enjoying the lake ride in summer.
Most of the public disembarked at Weggis. One can take a cable car from Weggis directly to Rigi Kaltbad which has a resort known for its peaceful and refreshing atmosphere and offers with ideal vistas of the surrounding nature. Reaching to the Rigi Kulm the top summit from here would be a combination of the cable car to Rigi Kaltbad and then a cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm.
We decided to get down at Vitznau the stop next to Weggis. We boarded a cogwheel train waiting at the Vitznau ferry terminal to transport us to the top summit of Rigi Mountain. The areas of Rigi are served by rack railways which are the oldest mountain railways, the Rigi Railways.
Once the train starts the ascend the views of the azure lakes and soaring mountains are stunning enough to leave anyone in awe.
As the train moved further the blue lakes faded away in the distance and the views of the rocky jagged mountains got more prominent.
Our train stopped on the way at Rigi Kaltbad station to pick up people who choose to climb to this station through the cable car. The distant views were now covered by forests and all we could see was the lovely meadows peppered yellow and white with the tiny spring flowers, grazing cows on green pastures and the quaint chalets on the sloping hills. We could hear the enchanting sounds of the cowbells everywhere. Our train finally came to a halt at the top summit Rigi Kulm at 1,800 meters above sea level.
Deep valleys on all sides surround the summit of the Rigi Mountain. The Hill had several vantage points and restaurants. We took some pictures of the train and decided to have a good brunch. The restaurant had quite a few items on the menu like potato fries, cakes, and salads. The Restaurant has a seating with wonderful views of the surrounding valleys.
Chhavi enjoyed running around on the large open terrace of the restaurant.
After having some good amount of brunch, we started to stroll on the paved stroller accessible pathway around the hill. Each and every view around the hill is breathtaking and creates a pure and tranquil ambiance.
Right next to the train station at Rigi Kulm one can view the green valleys with pine forests with an amazing backdrop of cloud-covered mountains in the distance.
One can spot numerous mountains and a bird’s eye view of the distant towns. Strikingly visible was the distant rugged rocky mountain of Pilatus.
We moved further to be amazed by the view of the vast deep blue Lucerne lake, which was the route of the ferry from Lucern to Vitznau. We could see Lucern city at a distance. We enjoyed the lake view and descended back towards the station and boarded the cogwheel train.
We reached the ferry station and decided to check out the souvenirs shop while we waited for the ferry. We did some souvenir shopping and boarded the ferry back to Lucern railway station. The scenic views on the way back that were previously hidden by mist looked more beautiful now due to the bright sunlight.
We reached Lucern station and spent some time in the funfair arranged around the station and reached back home right in time to enjoy our evening tea. Read more on the beautiful town of Lucerne.
