Swiss Alps have an entrancing beauty which entices travelers and hikers alike. These Alps have some of the gorgeous lakes which are mostly frozen in winter and unfurl their surrealism as soon as the sun shines brightly in summer and when the leaves turn crisp golden in autumn. We were already smitten by the charming beauty of Blausee and Oeschinensee lakes in Bernese Oberland. One of the beautiful places to visit in Switzerland Grindelwald First is a summit in Bernese Oberland which lures visitors with vistas of the magnificent snow-capped mountains. Grindelwald First is also popular with hikers for the beautiful mirror reflection in Bachalpsee of the surrounding peaks such as the Eiger, Schreckhorn, and Wetterhorn.
Geneva to Grindelwald
The gondolas to Grindelwald First operate only during the summer season. And when the cable cars started operating early summer we were all agog. We boarded a train to Grindelwald from Geneva early morning which took us around four hours to reach Grindelwald. Though the vistas all along the journey would keep one gazed to the windows, the sublime landscapes once you board the train from Interlaken to Grindelwald are sure to drift you off into a fairy tale reverie.
The green carpet peppered yellow with meadow flowers, the pretty chalets and the lush green alpine forests on the slopes of towering mountains everything seemed otherworldly.
Gondola Ride to Grindelwald First
From Grindelwald bus station, one has to take bus 121 or 123 to Grindelwald Firstbahn. From here it is around 5 minutes walk to the cable car station. Before taking the ride we decided to have breakfast in one of the restaurants near the bus station. Chhavi also had her morning feedings and was all set for the hike. Grindelwald is one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. The chalets and the churches of the village looked strikingly beautiful with the backdrop of gigantic mountains.
The route to the cable car station was brimming with bright colors of tulips planted all along the way. It was definitely a great start to the amazing day ahead. The Grindelwald First cable car experience was one of its kind, as the gondola started ascending, the village of Grindelwald dotted with chalets seemed dwarfed by the ubiquitous mountains standing tall.
Since it was the first day of the operation of the gondolas there were very few people and most of the cable cars rode empty. We had been to many of the cable car rides in Switzerland but this 25-minute ride up the mountain was breathtaking.
The paved path snaking through the immaculate green meadows dotted with pretty chalets against the backdrop of lush green hills looked like a postcard out of some fantasy storybook.
We even spotted some adorable bunch of Lamas grazing on the pastures.
There are paved paths winding through the slopes of hills right up to the first Gondola stop Bort. One could choose to hike all the way up to Bort. The first stop Bort also had a scooter station for the hikers who would choose to slide on the way back through these paved paths down to Grindelwald station.
The scenic vistas as we approached the next station of Schreckfeld was stunningly alluring we decided to get down and spend some time exploring and taking pictures around the station.
We came across a creaking wooden bridge running over some dry grass through which the melted snow formed a small gushing waterfall. And above which the gondolas glided towards the summit of Grindelwald First through the overcast sky.
Huge clumps of snow formed tiny undulating hills along the slushy path partially hidden in the snow due to heavy snowfall previous night.
We boarded back the gondola to Grindelwald First cable car station. One can also try a ride on the First Flyer and experience the adrenaline rushing free flow glide in the open air.
The first sight of Grindelwald First was completely covered with snow and the whole area was painted in the pure white fluffy snow. The path was punctuated with TISSOT adverts all along.
The trekking path to the Bachalpsee covered in snow was due to the heavy snowfall previous night and we could hardly push Chhavi’s stroller. The entry to the lake was closed though some people trudged through the knee-deep snow to make a visit to the lake which looked risky. We instead decided to enjoy the stunning views of snow peaks around.
We were a bit disappointed as we very much wanted to visit the lake and experience the famed reflections lusted by many hikers and travelers. But little did we know that a surprise was waiting for us right around the corner.
Grindelwald First Cliff Walk
We started walking ahead to take a roundabout to return to the gondola station and looking for more of the vistas of Swiss Alps. Then there it was a spectacular thrilling First cliff walk. The First cliff walk was stroller friendly hence we started walking on it. The views around and below with a sheer drop was mind-boggling and just cannot be expressed in words. We were dumbstruck. Even Chhavi was enjoying the fresh air and maybe the magnificent views of the mountain too.
There is also a restaurant at the summit where you can sit and devour on the delicious sandwiches with a view over the huge colossal mountains and never-ending beauty of ethereal landscapes.
We spent some time taking in the awe-inspiring views of the gigantic snow-capped mountains and the rejuvenating chilled mountain air. Grindelwald First is hands-down one of the best experiences in Switzerland. These pristine vistas will be etched in our memory for a lifetime and this trip to Grindelwald First would be cherished in our memories forever.
Before you plan a trip it is good to check for the operation and timings here.
